Just about five miles away from Riverstone is one of the area’s largest end-of-the-year celebrations, the second annual New Year’s Eve on the Square happening Friday, Dec. 31 at Sugar Land Town Square.
The event starts with a celebration geared for young revelers from 7 to 9 p.m. Children and their parents will enjoy Shan the Candyman, a candy sculptor who makes intricate works of edible candy art, a neon spray paint artist and a children’s disc jockey. Adding to the fun will be roaming Cirque du Soleil-style performers, street dancers, giant stilt birds and more. A fireworks finale ends the children’s celebration.
A second party follows from 9:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Many of the roaming artists continue and music by the 10-piece Fried Ice Cream also will add fun to the evening. To ring in the in the new year, a state-of-the-art live 3D show will include a special midnight countdown with a giant sugar cube that will appear to drop from the City Hall clock tower. Beer and wine (including sparkling wine) will be on sale. A Get Home Safely designated driver program is available offering free soft drinks and water to those who identify themselves as the designated drivers. Taxis also will be available and can be booked in advance or that evening.
This event is free and parking will be available. Free shuttle service from Mercer Stadium to the Town Square will be available from 6:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. For more information, go to www.sugarlandtx.gov or phone 281-275-2885.
