Fort Bend Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Charles E. Dupre, firefighters, Riverstone General Manager Trey Reichert and others shoveled dirt to ceremoniously break ground for Anne Sullivan Elementary School, which will open in Riverstone for the 2016-2017 school year.
Among those participating were family members of the school’s namesake, Anne McCormick Sullivan, a Dulles High School graduate and Houston firefighter who died in the line of duty on May 31, 2013, when a burning building collapsed, killing her and three of her comrades. As a tribute, members of the Houston Fire Department Pipes and Drums and Honor Guard participated in the special ceremony.
The school — located at 17828 Winding Waters Lane, Sugar Land — will be Fort Bend ISD’s 47th elementary school when it opens next year. Dupre said the school will offer a 21st century learning environment, complete with innovative technology and teaching strategies. The two-story campus will serve 1,200 students. It is being built to the exacting standards of the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) program, which recognizes best-in-class green building strategies and practices.
