Fort Bend drivers are cheering the opening of the final stretch of University Boulevard from Highway 6 to U.S. 59.
The 1.8-mile extension, a project of the City of Sugar Land and Fort Bend County from Riverstone to Commonwealth Boulevard, opened today. It connects with a 2-mile roadway through the master-planned community of Riverstone to provide access from Highway 6 to U.S. 59 near the University of Houston Sugar Land campus.
The $6-million extension through Riverstone, a major roadway for the community, was funded by developer Johnson Development Corp.
“The extensions of University Boulevard are important for all area residents,” said Tom Wilcox, general manager of Riverstone. “The completion of this project opens an entirely new access route to U.S. 59, which means it will be much easier for Fort Bend residents to reach major retail and employment centers in the area.”
Riverstone residents, who next year will enjoy a new community water park being built along University Boulevard, also will have easier access to the Fort Bend Tollroad once another community thoroughfare, LJ Parkway, is extended south to Sienna Springs in nearby Sienna Plantation later this year.
