Baines Middle School

One of Fort Bend’s newer middle school campuses, Baines opened in 2006 and has quickly established itself as a district leader.

To enhance the learning environment, classrooms are grouped by grade level in clusters of four classrooms and one science lab. Each classroom uses innovative smart board technology, which allows teachers to project lesson plans, PowerPoint presentations, notes and more onto in-room projection screens. Students also have specific classrooms for drama; band, orchestra, ensemble and choir (with practice rooms and instrument storage); journalism; competition and practice gyms. There also are foreign language classrooms, computer labs, art classrooms, a technology lab and traditional shop and a life management lab.

Baines students performed comparatively well among other Fort Bend middle schoolers on the TAKS test, posting improved scores in all but one subject area on the 2009 test. Ninety-five percent passed the reading portion of the test and 94 percent passed the writing portion. Ninety-two percent passed social studies, 87 percent passed the math section and 74 percent passed the science portion of the TAKS test.

In addition to academics, students have many opportunities for extracurricular activities, with a host of clubs, such as Art Club, Drawing Club, Math Club, Science Club, Spirit Squad and more. Plus, Baines sponsors an active music program, with choir, orchestra and an award-winning band. Student athletes also have distinguished themselves, with the eighth-grade football team co-division champions and two of the volleyball teams carrying an undefeated record in 2008 to win their division championships. Baines’ sporting facilities include a football field, weight room, four tennis courts and practice fields for baseball, softball and soccer.

Fort Settlement Middle School

One of just two middle schools in Fort Bend Independent School District to be rated exemplary by the Texas Education Agency, Fort Settlement is committed to meeting the unique needs of its students by fostering a community of academic excellence and social responsibility.

Opened in 2001, the school has rigorous academic standards, evidenced by students’ impressive performance on state-mandated TAKS tests. Ninety-nine percent of students passed reading, writing, social studies and math portions of the TAKS test in spring 2009. Ninety-five percent passed the science portion of the test.

Fort Settlement has garnered attention on a national level, being named as a 2007 No Child Left Behind – Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education.

Dedicated teachers work not only to guide students through middle school, but also to help them become lifelong learners. The curriculum is grounded in solid academic standards customized to middle school-age children. Teachers and administrators are cognizant of the concerns of adolescents and work to create a climate of both intellectual development and a caring community.

Parents are intensely involved in the school, with Fort Settlement’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) raising a tremendous amount of money to support student learning. Thanks to PTO efforts, the school has a digital video security system, a track and additional classroom equipment including microscopes, telescopes, atlases and more. The PTO also funds the summer library program. Safety was a PTO priority in 2007, with money raised to relocate the school’s courtyard fence to enclose the walkway doors used by students and staff.
